How To Register and Prepare for Attending:
- Confirm eligibility for students and teams (see below under Eligibility, Teams, Awards, and Sections for further discussion).
- Gather Student Data. Gather student lichess user names (register first at lichess.org if you don’t have one), passwords, emails, and phone numbers. We strongly recommend that coaches keep this information handy for tournament days. In particular, you should either gather for yourself, or strongly encourage students to make sure they have, their passwords for their lichess accounts – when they move from playing at home to playing in one location at school, they often forget!
- Join LiChess OHSCTA Team. All registrants must join “OHSCTA State 2022 team” on Lichess.org as some teams are playing virtually and may be the opponent, even for in-person teams. Instructions: Sign into lichess. Tap Community Tab. Tap Teams label. Find search bar upper right and type in OHSCTA State 2022 and tap join.
- Download and complete the OHSCTA 2022 Registration Template.
- Email the completed Registration Template to Nancy Keller and Jeff Dobbins as instructed on the sheet.
- Mail checks, made out to OHSCTA, to Jeff Dobbins, Willamette U. College of Law, 245 Winter St. SE, Salem, OR 97301
- Prepare an Eligibility Certification for your players on Varsity or JV teams confirming their eligibility status under the Bylaws. This should be a signed letter of certification on school letterhead from your superintendent, principal or athletic director listing each player by name and their qualification (see bylaws for additional information) to be e-mailed or hand-delivered no later than March 3 to drnancykeller at yahoo.com. You must have this information in order to play in the Varsity or JV Division.
- Review tournament etiquette, details of play, and the schedule (see below) with your players.
- Send Final Team Order by Midnight, March 2. All teams must present their first round lineup via email by midnight on Wednesday before the event or the lineup will be in rating order. Changes need to be made with the Executive Director drnancykeller at yahoo.com. Last minute changes may not be approved due to time schedule.
- Travel to the tournament location (for in person teams) or to a monitored room (for remote teams) for tournament play on Friday, March 4. Bring your Eligibility Certification as well as payment if it hasn’t yet been made.

Eligibility, Teams, Awards and Sections
Time Control and Sections: Time control will be G45+5 (45 minutes with 5 second increment, NWSRS rated. Sections will be fixed two days prior to the event by the Executive Director, in consultation with member coaches and the TD. Individuals may be placed in an individual section or (more likely) combined to form an open team. We will find a way to make sure that everyone gets a chance to play!
Awards: Awards will be given, as appropriate, to the Overall Varsity and Overall JV team winner based on the following definitions, and according to OSAA Classification (top score amongst 6A teams, top score amongst 5A teams, etc.), although schools in classifications with small numbers of participants may be grouped to form a larger combined class section (i.e., 3A-2A-1A). If we run an overall section and the Overall winner is different from the Varsity or JV winner, we will also award an Overall Team winner.
Eligibility and Team Definitions: The tournament is open to all Oregon students in grades 6-12, whether they have participated in a league or not. Please check our bylaws to learn more about tournament eligibility. To find out the OSAA designation for your school, visit http://www.osaa.org/schools/ Washington state players may not be eligible for prizes, but are welcome to participate as open team participants.
- VARSITY TEAM AWARDS: Varsity teams may be formed of five students who attend school or reside in Oregon high schools, grades 9-12. One team per high school allowed. See the bylaws, since homeschool students can, in appropriate circumstances, play for the public school of the district they reside in.
- JUNIOR VARSITY TEAM AWARDS: JV Teams may be formed of students who attend school or reside in Oregon schools, grades 6-12. One team per high school allowed. Middle School Teams made entirely of middle school students will also play in this section. If trouble finding players, with special permission elementary players will be allowed.
- OPEN TEAMS: Open Teams may be formed by any group of students who attend school or reside in Oregon or Washington, grades 6-12.
Seeding: Each player on the team will be assigned a rating based on their highest established rating in the NWSRS and USCF. If both are established or neither is established, we will assign the higher of the two. If a player is not rated in either system, they will be considered unrated and receive a rating per NWSRS guidelines of 100 points per grade (example – grade 10 = 1000 rating on unrated players). For purposes of pairing/seeding, the team’s average rating will be used.
Setup and COVID Considerations
- Spectators will not be allowed in the playing area, only coaches and TD’s.
- Mask wearing will be enforced and must be worn at all times. Refusal to wear mask properly may result in forfeit of game. The tournament play area will have social distancing between boards.
- Vaccinations strongly recommended.
- There will be team areas with a separate common area. Please do not intermix teams in team areas. You can mix with other teams at the common area which will be monitored. I know everyone has pandemic fatigue but let’s reduce the risk of mixing germs from different areas of the state by following public health recommendations.
- If any player feels sick or has been exposed to Covid at the last minute, that player should stay home and their coach/team leader should notify drnancykeller@yahoo.com so that player can play virtually from home.
- There will be no food or concessions onsite, but there are a number of options very close by.
- If there is another Covid surge, this tournament will be converted to completely virtual.
