Rather than the individual standings this week, I thought I’d include some other information:
Isaiah Dunn of Cottage Grove is the only player in the league to play and win all seven rounds so far. He has done it playing board 2 three times and board 3 four times. Rex Henzie of Marist has a six game win streak at board one. Nicholas Glesmann of Cottage Grove has a six game win streak at board four. Matt Harrison of Cottage Grove has gone undefeated, with five wins and a draw, since joining the league during the second round.
There is quite a rivalry developing at board one this year, as all of the
following have taken place:
In Round One, Charlie Offenbacher of Pleasant Hill defeated Rex Henzie of Marist. In Round Three, Rex Henzie defeated Jace Akerlund of Cottage Grove. In Round Four, Akerlund and Offenbacher fought to a draw. In Round Six, Henzie got revenge for his only loss of the season, handing Offenbacher his first loss. On February 3, Akerlund will face Henzie, and on February 10, it will be Offenbacher vs. Akerlund. Both Henzie and Offenbacher are freshmen, pointing to a stronger and stronger future for Midwestern League chess.
That’s it for now; more after Wednesday’s action.

The league looks to have some excellent players this year and there seems to be more parity among the teams than there has been recently. We are getting better!

Highlight match was between Jace Akerlund of Cottage Grove (2004 League MVP) and Logan Bevans of Thurston (2003 League MVP) The two dueled to a rook and pawns endgame but time pressure led to a mistake by Bevans and then his time expired leaving Akerlund the victor this time around.
This was a great kickoff to what looks like our most exciting season yet!
